Kerr, McIntosh to team up at KTR
A1 GP drivers Robbie Kerr and Sean McIntosh will team up for the World Series by Renault this season with the help former Formula One World champion John Surtees
As predicted in Autosport this week, A1 GP Team Great Britain boss Surtees has helped broker Kerr and driver of the sister Canadian team McIntosh into both seats of the KTR's crack World Series squad.
The pair will be part of Surtees' driver development scheme, and will spend this season in the 425bhp pan-European single-seater series to help prepare them both for a second season in A1 GP next winter.
The deal was finalised at the last round of A1 GP series in Monterrey, Mexico following a meeting with Surtees and A1 Team Canada seatholder Wade Cherwayko. The Belgian KTR team finished third in the series last season.
"For a number of years I've thought a system needed to be put in place to assist drivers in developing their careers," said Surtees.
"Having come together with Wade in A1 Grand Prix we have now created an opportunity to give drivers the opportunity of a year-round racing programme incorporating the regular season as well as the winter racing offered by A1 GP.
"This is all on the world stage which is vital if they wish to progress their careers."
Kerr believes he will learn a lot from former driver and KTR team boss Kurt Mollekens.
Kerr said: "He's a good experienced guy who was also a superb driver. He knows what he's watching when he sees you out on the circuit which will be a fantastic help in continuing to improve as the season progresses. I'm grateful to Wade and to John and I hope I can repay it with a shot at the title."
McIntosh, who won the Indonesian feature race for Team Canada, believes his Formula Renault UK experience will help him in the Renault-powered series.
"I'm excited to be staying within the Renault development ladder for another year, this time at the next level in the World Series," McIntosh said.
"I've learned a lot from racing in A1GP over the winter, not least in driving a higher horse-powered car so I feel I'm heading into the regular season more experienced and with more confidence."
