Jarama 1: Montagny takes victory
Renault Formula 1 test driver Frank Montagny scored a dominant victory in the opening round of the Dallara Nissan World Series, taking victory by nearly 16s from Ander Vilarino on a soaking Jarama circuit
The Frenchman excelled in the rain, regularly lapping over a second quicker than his rivals in conditions that saw just 10 of the 21 starters finish the race.
Indian Narain Karthikeyan tailed Montagny in the early going, but spun off on lap seven. Enrique Bernoldi, aided by a safety car period, took over the pursuit of the leader but soon found himself forced to fend off Vilarino for second. The Spaniard eventually forced his way around the outside of the Brazilian with just three laps remaining to claim the runner-up spot.
Finn Heikki Kovalainen finished fourth, with Bruno Besson fifth. Williams test driver Marc Gene endured a tough debut in the series, getting punted out of the race by Heikki Kovalainen on lap 12.
