Carbone seals back-to-back wins
Fabio Carbone completed belated back-to-back Formula Renault 3.5 victories by winning the first race at the Nurburgring today
The Brazilian won the last race at the Hungaroring almost two months ago and continued his streak after outbraking pole-man Fairuz Fauzy into Turn 1.
He then pulled away from the struggling Malaysian at three-quarters of a second a lap.
"We made a few mistakes in the Super Pole and didn't get the most out of the car," said Carbone. "Since the start of the race though, the car was really well balanced and good on the brakes, and that's where I managed to pass Fairuz."
Fauzy tenaciously fended off a number of pursuers to hold on to second. The Fortec Motorsport driver was less than a second ahead of championship favourite Giedo van der Garde at the flag.
Van der Garde had only just avoided a multi-car pile-up at Turn 1, which also aided Carbone's Ultimate-Signature teammate Esteban Guerrieri, who finished fourth from 14th on the grid.
The chaos kicked off when Alvaro Barba, starting sixth, tagged the rear of his Prema teammate Miguel Molina and was launched into the air. Both Spaniards retired in the incident, their second coming together of the season.
Marco Bonanomi, starting from his highest grid position in some time in fourth, was rammed by Charles Pic at the apex of the corner, and Bonanomi's Comtec machine spun to a halt on the racing line, causing a car park of seven stationery.
Julien Jousse held third place when the safety car, brought out as the first lap mess was attended to, was called in at the completion of lap two. The Frenchman pressured Fauzy for second until losing control on the exit of the Dunlop hairpin and spinning into retirement.
With Jousse second in the title race, the lapse was a sizeable gift to van der Garde who now leads the championship by 53 points.
Salvador Duran and Guerrieri picked up the fight to Fauzy, but on lap 12 the second placed man was handed some breathing space when Guerrieri put a move around the outside of Duran at the Veedol Chicane.
Duran was demoted a further position when he ran wide at Turn 1, allowing van der Garde into fourth. A mistake by Guerrieri entering the Ford Kurve four corners later handed the Dutchman third position.
On the following tour, Duran attempted a move on Guerrieri at the Dunlop hairpin. The manoeuvre turned sour as he found the marbles and then the gravel. Although delayed, Duran survived to battled back to sixth behind Carlin's Mikhail Aleshin.
