Watts the story?
Autosport.com's Formula 3 columnist Danny Watts enjoyed a much-needed upswing in fortune at Snetterton with the Promatecme Lola-Dome squad
The results we achieved at Snetterton at the weekend couldn't have come at a better time to try to help secure our immediate future in the British F3 Championship.
At the moment, the next round at Castle Combe is looking touch and go, but between Lola, Promatecme and myself, we are working overtime to raise the funding required to continue the programme. Besides, Castle Combe is a good track for me, last year I was pole for both, spun whilst leading in the first, then won the second race and took fastest too.
Snetterton was a successful weekend all round. We have moved another step forward with the car's development and that was proved with our pace. We qualified for race one in 11th position, just three-tenths off the pace - ah, the typical closeness of F3! For second qualifying we made an adjustment to the car that improved the balance and we qualified sixth, now just two-tenths off the pace.
On Saturday evening we had the cancelled race from Silverstone. I started seventh and was up to fifth and got stuck behind Ernesto Viso for the rest of the race and couldn't find a way past, so that is where I finished. That was our joint best result of the year, and I set third fastest overall. Not bad at all.
Sunday's races were successful too. In the first I started 11th, had an awesome start and was up to eighth. Then I overtook another couple of cars to finish sixth, so more good points for the championship.
Race two was a little quieter, as for most of the race I was alone in fifth, but all the action had taken place at the beginning, and for the first four laps I had a good, and fair, fight with Nelsinho Piquet. My car was fantastic on cold tyres and his came on after lap four, so it gave me a great opportunity to make some progress.
Overall, finishing fifth, fifth, and sixth at Lola's home circuit was very positive and just shows that we are moving forward all the time. Fingers crossed we can be out at Castle Combe, where I am really looking forward to emulating what we did last year - winning and not spinning!
