Vettel takes first pole of the season

Sebastian Vettel showed no ill effects from his Spa-Francorchamps Renault World Series shunt on his return to the F3 Euroseries, setting pole position for Saturday's opening race at the Nurburgring

Vettel (ASM), who almost lost his right index finger in the shunt last month, outpaced fellow Red Bull-backed driver Sebastien Buemi (Mucke Motorsport) by 0.048 seconds to take his first F3 pole of 2006.

"With the first set of tyres, it wasn't great," said Vettel. "After that, we changed the balance of my car a little and all of a sudden I was fast enough to take pole."

Buemi said: "Unfortunately, my car wasn't perfect with the second set of tyres. Otherwise, I could have been on pole. Five hundredths of a second is very little."

Championship dominator Paul di Resta was third fastest in his ASM car, ahead of top rookie Jonathan Summerton (Mucke).

Giedo van der Garde (ASM) was fifth fastest, with Kohei Hirate and Esteban Guerrieri leading the Manor Motorsport charge in sixth and seventh.
