Team-mates Bottas and Calado won't work together in Monza qualifying

GP3 title rivals and ART team-mates Valtteri Bottas and James Calado will not work together in qualifying to avoid any potential controversy on the championship-deciding weekend at Monza

MW Arden's Simon Trummer and Mitch Evans worked together in the closing stages of second practice, with Trummer taking advantage of the Kiwi's tow to set the fastest time of the session.

But while team-mates often tow each other round in qualifying when under-powered cars come to Monza, ART's Bottas and Calado have decided to stay out of each other's way in Saturday morning's grid-deciding session.

"I don't think it would be a good idea," championship leader Bottas told AUTOSPORT. "You don't want the risk of one of us being able to mess up the other's lap.

"We haven't spoken about it, I think we both just know that we should do our own thing and try to pick up a tow from other people."

Both drivers sat out the second free practice session to save a set of tyres for later in the weekend. And Calado believes that the slipstreaming nature of the Monza races means that getting a tow to take pole position is not vital at the Italian track.

"Some teams might work together, but with how the racing is going to be here you could almost start from anywhere and still win it," Calado told AUTOSPORT. "We'll leave each other alone and see where we end up.

"It's simple really - of course we don't want to help the person we're fighting for the championship with, but it could also cause problems if one person feels he didn't get as much help as he gave the other one."
