Silverstone race 1: Taylor inherits from Kerr
Mark Taylor was handed victory in the first race of this weekend's British Formula 3 Championship encounter at Silverstone after Robbie Kerr was disqualified for a clash with poleman James Courtney
Kerr had taken the lead from championship leader Courtney on the opening lap, but the Australian did not give up. He tracked the Briton closely until Kerr made a mistake on lap four, allowing the Carlin driver to get a run on him as they approached Bridge corner.
The pair clashed, leaving Courtney to limp back to the pits and into retirement. Not only had he lost the race, but also the £15,000 prize for the Everitt Boles Challenge award, given to any driver taking pole position and winning the first race at three successive F3 rounds. Kerr continued to take the flag, but was then disqualified for the incident. His Alan Docking Racing team has appealed the decision.
Taylor's fortune could have fallen to Richard Antinucci, had the American not made a costly error. After making what looked like a jumped start, Antinucci latched on to Kerr and Courtney over the opening laps, but spun at Brooklands on lap two and could only recover to finish ninth in the top Championship Class.
Scholarship class pace-setter Adam Carroll would have finished fourth overall, only for a spin at Copse to ruin his race. He flat-spotted his tyres and could only come home sixth in class.
The second race takes place tomorrow (Monday).
