Race 2: Jouanny scores first win

France's Bruce Jouanny, 22, won the second round of the British Formula 3 Championship at Brands Hatch today (Monday), after roaring past poleman James Courtney off the startline

The first start was red flagged after the Fortec cars of Fabio Carbone and Heikki Kovalainen stalled and Carbone's car was struck from behind by the Scholarship Class machine of Mohammed Fairuz.

Courtney (Carlin Dallara-Mugen) had made a terrible getaway from that start, with both Kerr (ADR Dallara-Mugen) and Jouanny (Promatecme) passing him before Paddock, and at the second attempt Jouanny leapt ahead once more, although Courtney managed to box Kerr in behind him.

"For some reason they allowed James to start in the middle of the track, so he was right in my line of fire," complained Kerr, who was forced to settle for third despite a mid-race attack that caused Courtney to defend resolutely.

Jouanny held his nerve after an early Safety Car period, and pulled out a 2sec lead at one stage which Courtney reeled in to 0.366s at the flag.

"I think I'm the happiest man here today," said Jouanny. "I nearly stalled at the first start, but I gave it some more revs and made a good one when it counted."

Courtney said: "I was faster in the high speed stuff, but they were quicker in the low speed corners which are the only places to pass."

Adam Carroll, who only started the race as a reserve after a throttle cable broke in qualifying, won a thrilling Scholarship class battle after Clivio Piccione spun to avoid a slowing car at Surtees on the final lap.
