Race 1: Winkelhock wins through

A tigerish, if hardly error-free, drive from Markus Winkelhock netted him victory in the 13th round of the German Formula 3 Championship at Eurospeedway Lausitz on Saturday, but Frank Diefenbacher's second place was enough for him to grab back the series lead

Winkelhock (Mucke Motorsport Dallara-Opel) made a great start from second on the grid and just squeezed past poleman Diefenbacher (Bert Schafer Racing Dallara-Opel) to lead at the first corner. They were followed by Winkelhock's team mate Stefan Mucke and Diefenbacher's colleague Toshihiro Kaneishi, who led the championship coming into the Lausitz round.

Further back, a collision between Bjorn Wirdheim and his Prema PowerTeam Dallara-Opel team mate Kousuke Matsuura sent the Japanese spiralling off the track with puncture and the Swede trailing in to retirement with a broken front wing.

That promoted Gary Paffett's Team Rosberg-run Dallara Opel to fifth, and he fended off Pierre Kaffer (Team Kolles Dallara-Opel) for the remainder of the race.

At the front, Winkelhock eked out a comfortable advantage until two big slides on successive laps gave Diefenbacher a chance to pass at Turn One on lap 12. Despite a brave lunge around the outside, and a very near miss between the duo, Winkelhock held on to his advantage and went on to win by 0.7secs.

Diefenbacher's runner-up spot gives him the series lead by a point from Kaneishi, with Kaffer seven points off the leader's pace in third.
