Qual 1: Winkelhock's pole
Christian Klien slotted into his seemingly traditional third-row position for the first Euroseries F3 race at Hockenheim later today (Saturday). Unspectacular it was - once again - but this time Ryan Briscoe is no less than twelve places behind him on the grid!
Wet weather at Hockenheim made for a tricky session, yet Briscoe was the only top driver to lose out so convincingly. Eighteenth on the grid means that he mathematically can't take the title this afternoon - although he already knows he'll be starting from pole tomorrow (Sunday).
Markus Winkelhock made the best of a session that began in light rain and murky skies. Times continued to drop amid a series of artistic low-speed pirouettes (particularly on Turn One's painted kerbs) to which nearly every driver contributed.
Just as the track was beginning to look suitable for attack, a more serious shower arrived. That put a stop to any chance Briscoe had of moving up the grid.
The first race takes place at 1320 (BST) this afternoon, and with the darkest of clouds hovering above the pits, there's every chance it will be damp at best. The race will represent Klien's last chance to snatch some championship initiative before it's too late. Full report on this website this afternoon.
