Preview: Courtney and Davies again?
Strength in depth is a good adage by which to judge the health of a championship, and the fact that any one of at least 10 drivers could take a win in the second round of British Formula 3 at Snetterton this weekend must be a good sign
Form books were ripped up and pre-season favourites forgotten in the opening rounds at Silverstone, with victory in both 20-minute races going to unexpected candidates. Jaguar Racing's James Courtney scored a splendid debut win in the first race, while the victor's spoils in round two went to Matt Davies, who had not even secured a drive until the previous Friday.
Whether the pair can repeat their performances at Snetterton is anybody's guess, but therein lies the attraction of the series. None of the teams will have tested between the two races and the drivers that rise to the top of the time sheets this weekend will be those who are quick to find the right direction on set-up on the technically demanding, low downforce Norfolk track.
The teams ran at the Norfolk circuit twice in March, and while testing is not renowned for being a solid judge of race form, Japanese hotshoe Takuma Sato was quick on both occasions. What is more, the BAR test driver will be keen make up lost ground after Silverstone misdemeanours, when he took off Jamie Spence in the first race and hit Jeffrey Jones in the second.
Sato lies equal sixth in the standings along with Paul Edwards. The pair are 17 points behind Edwards' Alan Docking Racing team mate Andy Priaulx in fifth on 23, just one point behind Courtney, Gianmaria Bruni and Derek Hayes, who all tie for second. Top of the crop however, is Davies with 26 points who has found the funds to compete this weekend, but has yet to secure enough cash for the entire season.
Expect Priaulx to go well at round two, as the Guernseyman has settled well into the ADR squad after the disappointment of missing out on drives with top teams Jaguar and Manor Motorsport. In his second year in F3, the 27-year-old seems to improve with every performance and was as strong as ever at Silverstone.
Fellow BAR tester and team mate to Sato at Carlin Motorsport, Anthony Davidson will also be keen capitalise on testing form, after topping the times at Snetterton in the earlier of the March tests. This year's BRDC McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year finished seventh and 11th at Silverstone and will be keen to move closer to the sharp-end this weekend.
The RC Motorsport pairing of Ryan Dalziel and Nicolas Kiesa could also be a force to be reckoned with. After a disappointing weekend at Silverstone, the Prost Junior outfit will be back fighting and the dark blue cars occupied the first and third slots in the most recent Snetterton test three weeks ago.
None of the crack Manor Motorsport triumvirate should be dismissed. Hayes is consistently quick, Jones was unlucky to tangle with Sato last time out and the talent of Mark Taylor is unquestionable after finishing second to James Courtney in Formula Ford last year.
In the Scholarship class, Matthew Gilmore is likely to pick up from where he left off at Silverstone with two class wins. The Performance Racing ace overturned pre-season form to come out on top, but can expect some fierce opposition from the Meritus-run car of Michael Keohane and Diamond Racing's Mark Mayall.
