F3 drivers to put skills on show

Rivals Marc Hynes and Matt Davies will be hoping to use this weekend's British Grand Prix meeting as a shop window into the big time.

Both Hynes and Davies will be looking to impress the F3000 and F1 bosses at Silverstone.

They will be performing in front of the Grand Prix circus and all the teams in the International Formula 3000 Championship, the only intermediate category between F3 and F1.

A good result here could be a massive boost to a driver's aspirations for the 2000 season and beyond.

'There is always something special about racing in front of a big crowd, and we'll get one at Silverstone,' says Hynes.

'We were quickest there in testing for the race, and I feel that we still have something in hand, but the rubber from the Formula One cars always alters the track, and the other teams will be working hard to catch up.'

'You have to work hard to break into Grand Prix racing and Silverstone is a chance to impress the right people.'

Formula 3 rookie, Davies, meanwhile hopes to build his regular top six finishes into race-winning performances.

'It's an incentive to do well,' said Davies.

'If you're one of the top runners in the championship you don't want to go badly at Silverstone, because it's the only time we'll be seen in front of the F1 and F3000 people.

'You have to do what they expect of you.

'But for someone like me in my first season, it's an opportunity to suddenly earn myself a reputation, and that's what I'm aiming for.'

Davies was sixth fastest in the recent test at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.
