Ed Jones fills vacant Fortec European Formula 3 seat for Hockenheim
Anglo-Emirati racer Ed Jones will fill Fortec Motorsport's vacant FIA Formula 3 European Championship seat for this weekend's round at Hockenheim
The 18-year-old, who was born and raised in Dubai, will join Felix Serralles, Josh Hill and Pipo Derani in Fortec's quartet of Dallara-Mercedes racers.
He replaces Belarussian Dmitry Suranovich (pictured below), who stood down from his Fortec drive on the eve of the second round at Silverstone.
The deal adds further to a busy programme for Jones, who is also contesting the Formula Renault Eurocup with Fortec and the European F3 Open with Team West-Tec.
He will also drive his West-Tec car in British F3 races, and is doing selected FR North European Cup events with Fortec too.
Fortec has run Jones since he moved into car racing - initially in the British-based InterSteps series for old Formula BMWs - in 2011.
Team boss Richard Dutton stressed that at this point the outing is a one-off, but further races could be added.
"All the frontrunners in Formula Renault Eurocup are very, very good," said Dutton. "He's knocking on the door there and was in the top 10 for most of the weekend at Motorland Aragon [scene of last weekend's opening round].
"I think he will be all right and will surprise a few people."
Although Jones has experience of the current-spec Dallara F312 chassis in Euro F3 Open, it will be his first taste of the engines and car development in FIA-rules F3.
He will not get his first taste of the car until free practice on Friday, but has already raced at Hockenheim this year in Renault NEC.
