Di Resta wins topsy-turvy race

Paul di Resta won Sunday's 12th round of the F3 Euroseries from seventh position on the reverse grid after driving a canny, yet controversial, race as the famous fickle Eifel mountain weather conditions struck again

The race started in dry conditions, with pole-sitter Kamui Kobayashi streaking into a huge lead from pole position.

At the same time, second placed Richard Antinucci (HBR) held up Giedo van der Garde (ASM) for the opening eight laps until the Dutchman swept past at Turn 1 on lap eight.

Di Resta had worked his way up to fourth on the opening lap, chased by Sebastien Buemi (Mucke) and Sebastian Vettel (ASM).

Buemi attacked di Resta at the chicane and, after a brief touch of wheels, it allowed Vettel to gain a run on Buemi into Turn 1. After racing side by side for the next two corners, Vettel made fifth place his.

Then, the race was turned on its head by a heavy rain shower. Kobayashi went straight on at the first corner but recovered in the lead, while Antinucci spun out of third.

The safety car was called into play for a couple of laps as the shower passed, and the race would restart for a four-lap shoot-out on a greasy track with almost all the cars still on slick tyres.

Kobayashi ran wide at Turn 1, gifting the lead to van der Garde. The Japanese fought back in Turn 2, retaking the lead, but van der Garde was in front again a corner later.

Di Resta then grabbed second from Kobayashi at the hairpin, and then attacked van der Garde into the chicane.

Di Resta's move ended in contact, however, sending his team-mate spinning out of the lead. He claimed van der Garde moved across him too late, but Giedo disagreed and laid the blame firmly at Paul's door.

Di Resta then pulled away to take a convincing victory, but had to contend with a livid van der Garde who grabbed his racesuit in parc ferme afterwards, before he was ushered away by the quick-acting scrutineers.

Vettel finished second after Kobayashi and Buemi tripped over each other at Turn 2, and Buemi spun properly a few moments later after taking a hit from Charlie Kimball (Signature).

The man on the move was Antinucci who, after spinning out of third, had pitted for wet-weather tyres and stormed through the entire field to regain third by the chequered flag.

Kobayashi finished fourth, ahead of Peter Elkmann (Jo Zeller Racing) and Esteban Guerrieri (Manor) who also worked wonders from a lowly grid position.
