Di Resta champion as Guerrieri wins

Esteban Guerrieri's victory in Saturday's F3 Euro Series race handed the title to Paul di Resta, after the latter threw his own chances of a race win away by jumping the start

Both Di Resta and ASM teammate Giedo van der Garde jumped the start quite comprehensively, and both received drive-through penalties that dropped them into the lower reaches of the midfield.

Di Resta cited a slipping clutch as the reason for his premature departure.

That gifted Guerrieri the lead, but he then nearly threw it away by going off at the first corner on lap 13, allowing the chasing Sebastian Buemi, who had passed di Resta's title rival Sebastien Vettel on lap 2, the chance to attack.

Despite Buemi's efforts, Guerrieri hung on to take a deserved victory, ahead of Buemi (whose front wing bizarrely worked loose on the slowing down lap) and Vettel.

Guillaume Moreau (Signature) overcame Kohei Hirate (Manor) for fourth, with Charlie Kimball (Signature), series debutant Roberto Streit (Prema) and Jonathan Summerton rounding out the point scorers.

Di Resta had looked set to score the point he would have needed had Vettel won, but his efforts to catch Summerton for the sought-after reverse grid pole spot caused him to run wide twice at the first corner, the second time allowing van der Garde to repass him.

He finished down in 10th, but the title was his regardless.

Di Resta said: "It was a bad race after the problem I had at the start, but winning the championship is the main thing, so I'm pleased about that."
