Summerton wins final race

Jonathan Summerton converted the reverse grid pole position into victory in the F3 Euro Series finale at Hockenheim, but his win wasn't at all straightforward and he survived a major clash with fellow American Charlie Kimball

Summerton made a good start from pole, while Kimball took advantage of Roberto Streit's slow getaway from the other front row slot to grab second. Kohei Hirate passed Streit at Spitzkehre hairpin on the opening lap, and Sebastian Vettel followed suit in the Mercedes Arena.

Hirate had a massive moment at Turn 1 starting lap 2, allowing Vettel and a charging Giedo van der Garde to pass him. They all moved up a place when Kimball misjudged his braking into Spitzkehre and rammed Summerton, briefly flying through the air and into retirement with deranged suspension.

Summerton escaped unscathed, while Vettel threw away second place by spinning at Turn 1 and Sebastian Buemi took third from Hirate at the Mercedes Arena.

Van der Garde chased down Summerton, but when he caught him he could do nothing to pass. Buemi now came into the equation, and lunged ahead of van der Garde at Spitzkehre on the final lap.

Van der Garde clung on with a brave retaliatory move at the Mercedes Arena, and the close following Esteban Guerrieri even grabbed third from Buemi for a split second before running wide.

At the finish, they finished in the order Summerton, van der Garde, Buemi, Guerrieri, with Streit taking fifth after Hirate spun at Turn 1 and new champion Paul di Resta taking the final point after a quiet race in sixth.
