Buurman grabs dramatic win
Yelmer Buurman scored a thrilling last lap victory for Fortec Motorsport at a wet Spa-Franchorchamps today
The Dutch rookie driver snatched the win from Maro Engel - another driver who was looking for his first win in the championship - at the Bus Stop on the final lap.
The win means the end of the Double R and Carlin Motorsport monopoly on 2006 victories.
Engel led all the way from pole position but the track got wetter throughout and Buurman, renowned for his rain skills, caught the German just in time. It was not so much a pass as an error from Engel, who ran deep under braking, and couldn't stop Buurman driving around the outside of the right-hander.
These two ran the full distance on slicks, but those drivers who elected to start from the pits on wet tyres almost hauled them in.
Bruno Senna's Double R car was the first of these in third, having forced a similar error from Oliver Jarvis just moments after Engel's slip.
Championship leader Mike Conway also profited from this and took some decent points for fourth place.
The second race of the weekend is being held tomorrow morning.
