Baptista OK for Silverstone GP3 after airborne Austria incident

GP3 racer Bruno Baptista says he is clear to compete in this weekend's Silverstone races despite hurting his back in an airborne incident in Austria last week

Baptista OK for Silverstone GP3 after airborne Austria incident

Baptista's DAMS car flew through the air into the run-off area at the Red Bull Ring's penultimate corner during the sprint race, after he hit the raised yellow painted "baguette" kerbs that were used to enforce track limits.

He pulled over after he felt pain in his back and was seen holding it as he returned to pitlane.

The 20-year-old Brazilian received some treatment on his back during the four days between the end of the Austrian round and the start of the British event.

He finished 19th in GP3 practice at Silverstone after missing much of the session due to a brake problem.

Baptista ran wide on several occasions across the kerbs and run-off area at the Copse right-hander, but said his back had held up well and that he not been required to pass on FIA fitness test before driving.

"The car was OK after the flying but my back after the impact, I don't know why but my muscle is not so good," he told Autosport.

"I had [some treatment] but not too much, I think it's going to be OK.

"I did just eight laps [in Silverstone practice], but my back is 100% fine."

In Austria, Max Verstappen led the criticism from the Formula 1 drivers about the suitability of the baguette kerbs.

Baptista said his incident was further proof that sort of kerb should be reconsidered for single-seater races.

"I lost the apex for Turn 9 a little bit and I went a little bit off track and this point of the track has the yellow sausage," he told Autosport.

"I just touched my floor [on] this yellow sausage and my car just flew.

"For me, these yellow sausages are not safe for the drivers.

"I think the FIA needs to try another thing for the track limits because my back was not so good."
