Asmer takes Bucharest pole

Marko Asmer fully justified his decision to forego racing in Japan this weekend by taking pole position for the first British Formula Three race in Bucharest, which takes place tomorrow

But although the experienced Estonian is used to being on pole this season, the Hitech Racing man has some unfamiliar company on the front row.

Alberto Valerio (Carlin Motorsport) put in his best qualifying performance yet to go second in what was a messy session interrupted by three red flags.

Fortec Motorsport's Sebastian Hohenthal was third, with Sam Bird (Carlin Motorsport) the next fastest around the unique street circuit, which runs around the Romanian parliament building.

Two more Carlin drivers fill the third row, with Niall Breen edging out Maro Engel. The latter, who is the only man besides Asmer to have won this season, was frustrated to have a promising lap aborted by the final red flag.

This was caused by Esteban Guerreri's accident in the Ultimate Motorsport Mygale - but the team were able to celebrate Michael Devaney qualifying tenth.

Ali Jackson kept up his fine form to take the National Class pole.
