Asmer on top at Oulton Park

Series returnee Marko Asmer continued his strong winter form by topping the final pre-season British Formula Three Championship test at Oulton Park yesterday

Hitech Racing driver Asmer, who has had to miss several tests because of clashes with his parallel Japanese F3 programme, was 0.143 seconds quicker than Stephen Jelley, who has also been a regular testing pacesetter for defending champions Raikkonen Robertson Racing.

Formula Renault graduate Sebastian Hohenthal was the best of the rookies in third, but was over half a second behind the experienced leading duo.

Michael Meadows narrowly beat Sergio Perez in the National Class, with 'Frankie' Cheng also within a couple of tenths of the pace.

Maro Engel was only ninth quickest on his first appearance since signing a late deal with Carlin Motorsport, behind teammates Sam Bird, Niall Breen and Alberto Valerio.

With lead driver Esteban Guerrieri still in Argentina and having recently split with Ben Clucas, new Mygale team Ultimate Motorsport ran Brazilian Marcello Thomaz and sometime A1GP driver Michael Devaney at Oulton.

Thomaz had to pull out of the test after 29 laps due to illness and will be replaced by Formula Ford champion Nathan Freke for development work at Pembrey later this week.

The test was disrupted by several red flags, with the most dramatic incident befalling Alan Docking Racing's National Class runner Viktor Jensen, who crashed at Druids after only four laps and had to sit out the remainder of the afternoon.
