Antonio Felix da Costa d Costa rules out fighting for GP3 title

Red Bull junior driver Antonio Felix da Costa says he is not part of the GP3 title fight yet despite being the form man in the championship

The Portuguese racer was languishing ninth in the standings after the first three double-header rounds of the season, but in the three rounds since then he has heavily outscored everybody to vault up to third in the championship.

Da Costa became the first driver to win both GP3 races in a meeting at the Hungaroring last weekend, but afterwards he declined to speak about the title fight, where he is 34 points behind leader Mitch Evans with rounds at Spa and Monza remaining.

"In any normal race we are very quick and we get the results," said da Costa, who had an incident-packed start to the season. "The speed is there and we should be fighting for the championship but we are not.

"I am just going to keep having fun and keep trying to win races and see what happens. I am going to push 200 per cent from now on. But I'm not stupid. I know this [winning both races in a weekend] isn't going to happen every weekend."

The Carlin driver also explained that his deficit in the title fight is allowing him to take more risks, as he can just focus on individual race results rather than worrying about playing safe.

"For me it makes no sense to score two or three points, I don't need to defend anything," he added. "I need to catch up.

"It's nice to make history by winning two races. Next up is Spa which is my favourite track and I think I've got something else to give there. And Monza I won at last year so I am looking forward to those rounds very much."
