A1-Ring race 2: Wirdheim wins

Bjorn Wirdheim won his second German F3 Championship race of the season at the A1-Ring in Austria on Sunday, but the bruising action behind the victorious Swede has contrived to set-up a tie for the lead of the series with just one weekend remaining

Wirdheim managed to steer clear of trouble, despite two safety car periods which allowed second placed Stefan Mucke the opportunity to try and grab the lead at the restarts. Despite Mucke's efforts, he finished a second in arrears by the end, just ahead of Frank Diefenbacher.

The latter regained the ground he lost yesterday to BSR team mate Toshihiro Kaneishi, and the Japanese driver's sixth placed finish today means they go to the Hockenheim finale locked together on 172 points.

Kaneishi had looked set for fourth place, but a well executed move by Britain's Gary Paffett caused him to lose momentum and allowed Joao Paulo de Oliveira past too. Paffett had stormed his way up to fourth from eighth on the grid, and pulled off some stunning passing manoeuvres - most notably on Kousuke Matsuura at the Niki Lauda Kurve.
