VW delighted with top six finish

Volkswagen Motorsport chief Kris Nissen has described the manufacturer's return to F3 Euro Series as "more than we had hoped for" after the all-new engine finished sixth on its race debut at the Nurburgring on Saturday

German Maxi Gotz finished sixth in his RC Motorsport-run, VW-powered Dallara, benefiting from two collisions and a penalty ahead of him, which handed him three points.

"I'm more than pleased we could run in the top 10," said Nissen, "but I have to say the first four cars in the race today were much faster throughout the race.

"But they started on new tyres, and we started on old tyres, to save them for tomorrow. Our speed deserved a finish of around seventh or eighth."

Gotz said: "I'm very happy, because it's our first weekend. We did a good job, although I feel qualifying showed our real speed: position eight.

"Finishing sixth was a great result, and I felt I could follow [fifth placed Romain] Grosjean in the latter stages quite comfortably.

"I've got a good starting position for tomorrow in third, so I'm confident we can score a podium from there."

Gotz's RC Motorsport team-mate Jonathan Summerton didn't fare so well, getting punted into a spin at the first corner by Euan Hankey. He recovered to finish 18th. The other VW-powered car was Marco Holzer (AM-Holzer) in 20th.
