Honda protege Tadasuke Makino loses best European F3 result

Honda protege Tadasuke Makino has lost the best finish of his Formula 3 European Championship career after being hit with a post-race time penalty following the first race at the Nurburgring

The stewards' decision stated that Makino "did not comply with the FCY [full-course-yellow] requirements", and the addition of a five-second time penalty drops him from fourth to seventh.

The penalty promotes Callum Ilott to fourth, Ferdinand Habsburg to fifth and Jehan Daruvala to sixth.

Makino did not make up any positions during the FCY in question, which was the first of the two that featured in the wet race.

The FCY was caused by a crash for Hitech GP team-mate Nikita Mazepin, who was running fourth at the start of lap three when he was hit by F3 debutant Sacha Fenestraz on the pit straight.

Mazepin spun out of control on the wet track towards Turn 1, narrowly missed Ilott, and finished up in the barriers.

Fenestraz was given a drive-through penalty for the incident, and was repentant afterwards.

"On the straight I couldn't see anything," the Formula Renault Eurocup leader told Autosport.

"I went to the outside to see something, and he went too, and I was surprised when he braked.

"I saw him too late, and tried to turn to the left at the last moment - I'm really sorry to him because it's my fault obviously.

"The penalty was obvious and I was waiting for it - next time I will be more careful behind someone in these conditions."

Another debutant, Petru Florescu, was also in trouble again after his Friday woes with the stewards, this time copping a 10-second penalty - and one licence penalty point - for gaining an advantage in straight-lining the chicane, dropping him from 17th to 18th.

Florescu and Motopark team-mate Keyvan Andres Soori were also fined €500 each for racing past the chequered flag twice, having failed to spot it the first time because they were battling each other.

The Romanian's weekend tally of fines is now up to €1700.
