Carlin's Jazeman Jaafar tops British F3 test ahead of Silverstone round

Jazeman Jaafar proved his British Formula 3 International Series title credentials by topping both one-hour test sessions ahead of this weekend's round at Silverstone

Malaysian Jaafar, who lies 20 points behind series leader Jack Harvey and 16 behind second-placed Felix Serralles, lapped 0.225 seconds faster than Carlos Sainz Jr, who himself has an outside chance of attacking the title.

The duo, who both drive Dallara-Volkswagens for the Carlin team, were a long way clear of the opposition, which was headed by Rupert Svendsen-Cook.

The Suffolk driver is making his British F3 comeback this weekend in a Double R Racing Dallara-Mercedes, and showed fine form in the morning session, despite only having raced once this season, in the European F3 Open.

Harvey and Serralles were down in seventh and eighth in the morning; the former being the only driver to improve in the afternoon as he went second fastest to Jaafar and moved his Carlin machine up to fifth overall.

With ambient temperature climbing to 23 degrees C, and track temperatures in the 40s, all lap times were considerably slower than in the pre-season test back in March.

Serralles had a red-flag-causing off in the morning due to a broken rear-wing strut, and could not match Fortec Motorsport Dallara-Mercedes team-mates Alex Lynn and Pipo Derani, who ended the day fourth and sixth respectively.

Harry Tincknell and Spike Goddard forced the other stoppages, Tincknell due to brake issues that caused him to halt on-track.

With Adderly Fong absent this weekend, Duvashen Padayachee topped the National Class runners in his Double R Racing Dallara, although Goddard was narrowly quickest in the afternoon.
