Daniel Juncadella leads first Masters of Formula 3 qualifying at Zandvoort

Daniel Juncadella claimed provisional pole position for the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort with his final flying lap of a rain-delayed first qualifying

The Spaniard was just 14th when the session was red-flagged five minutes from the end after Mucke's Felix Rosenqvist and Prema's Raffaele Marciello both stopped out on track.

On a constantly drying circuit however there was still time to improve when the session did eventually resume, and on his final lap Juncadella (Prema) got down to a 1m45.127s to seal provisional pole for Sunday's race.

In doing so he also demoted Carlos Sainz Jr (Carlin) into second. The Spaniard had moved almost one second clear of the field prior to the red flag, improving on his own benchmark several times, but could not repeat the feat following the restart and wound up just over one tenth down on Juncadella as a result.

Rosenqvist fell even more heavily. Second prior to the red flag, damage to the left front of his Dallara-Mercedes ruled him out of the final minutes, and he slipped to fifth by the session's finish.

Like Juncadella, Alex Lynn (Fortec) came from outside the top eight to claim third, while Carlin's Will Buller improved from sixth to fourth in the final minute.

Home favourite Hannes van Asseldonk (Fortec) finished fractions behind Rosenqvist in sixth, ahead of Mucke's Pascal Wehrlein and current FIA European F3 Championship leader Raffaele Marciello. The Prema man stopped on the outside of S-Bocht at the same time Rosenqvist was forced to park at the Hugenholtz.

His team-mate Michael Lewis ended first qualifying ninth, ahead of Fortec's Pipo Derani.
