GP2 promises to control costs despite plans to expand in 2012

The championship is working towards a 12-round calendar for 2012, as it will merge the winter-based Asia series with the main championship.

That has led to concerns from teams and drivers regarding the potential budgets for next season, but Michel believes GP2 will be able to keep costs under control.

"We are currently working on the 2012 calendar, which will most likely consist of 12 rounds; eight in Europe and four overseas," said Michel. "We are working on finding different options in order to control the costs and keep affordable a season on such a complex car and in the F1 environment."

One of the ways this will be achieved is by GP2 deciding against adopting any of the overtaking aids used in Formula 1 such as KERS and DRS. And Michel added that he didn't think a junior category should go down the route of trying to artificially spice up the show.

"We considered many options during the design of the [2011] car, including moveable wings and KERS," he said. "But we decided against them as we felt it was not in keeping with the spirit of our series.

"GP2 has always been about finding the best drivers. When you are one step away from the pinnacle of motor racing, you should be able to race and overtake without assistance from the car."
