Michael Ammermuller cruised to his maiden GP2 victory, taking the flag in the sprint race at Valencia almost 10 seconds clear of the field.
The Red Bull-backed rookie made a great start from second on the grid and was never threatened from there on, gradually extending his advantage over Ernesto Viso on every lap before backing off slightly in the closing stages.
Viso had too much wheelspin off the line and spent the entire race fending off Ammermuller's Arden teammate Nicolas Lapierre. The pair were never more than a few tenths of a second apart, but the Frenchman never found a way through.
Nelson Piquet Jr made a great start from eighth, muscled his way by Gimmi Bruni for fourth at the second turn and held onto that place to the end to extend his early title points lead.
Bruni took fifth, while Lewis Hamilton claimed the final point in sixth after an eventful race.
The Briton spent the first half of the race stuck behind Jose Maria Lopez, but finally forced the Super Nova man into a small mistake and then took full advantage.
Hamilton then passed Adam Carroll and Adrian Valles on the same lap to take a well-earned point.
Carroll, Valles and Lopez would end their races in spectacular fashion.
As Valles defended from Carroll, the Brit tripped over the back of his car and was launched into the air and a series of rolls. The car bore the brunt of the impact and Carroll emerged smiling. Lopez was caught up in the ensuing chaos.
