Trident's Haas F1 junior Maini tops day two of F2 Bahrain test

Haas Formula 1 junior Arjun Maini led the way for Trident on the second day of Formula 2's final pre-season test, which is taking place in Bahrain this week

Maini set a time of 1m42.779s - a second quicker than Nyck de Vries' best effort from day one - during the opening hour of running, and he reamained unbeaten across the remainder of the day's action.

Renault F1 reserve driver Jack Aitken ended up as Maini's closest challenger, finishing 0.224s adrift for ART Grand Prix.

The quickest times from all the drivers came during the morning running, with focus switching to race simulations after the lunch break.

De Vries was able to stay towards the front of the pack for the second day in a row, taking third for Prema Racing, with Campos Racing's Luca Ghiotto finishing fourth.

Charouz Racing System's Louis Deletraz placed fifth, in front of British rookies George Russell (ART) and Lando Norris (Carlin).

Russian Time newcomer Tadasuke Makino split Arden International team-mates Maximilian Gunther, who was unable to run after lunch due to a mechanical issue, and Nirei Fukuzumi to round out the top 10.

Ex-Manor F1 driver Roberto Merhi was 13th as he continued testing duties for MP Motorsport, while Roy Nissany finished 18th for Campos.

Both teams are yet to finalise the remaining spots in their 2018 line-ups.

Last year's F2 runner-up Artem Markelov was a low-key 15th, bringing out one of the day's two red flags when he spun through Turn 8 early-on.

The other stoppage was triggered by Alexander Albon (DAMS) halting at pit entry during the morning running.

One final day of testing will take place on Friday, ahead of the opening round of the season at the same venue in two weeks' time on the support bill for the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix.
