Zonta Goes Quickest at Jerez - Day One

Three Formula One teams got back to work today at the Jerez circuit following the back-to-back Grands Prix in France and Great Britain.

Three Formula One teams got back to work today at the Jerez circuit following the back-to-back Grands Prix in France and Great Britain.

Toyota, Ferrari, and McLaren were in action at the Spanish circuit, where seven Formula One teams are scheduled to test this week.

The fastest driver today was Brazilian Ricardo Zonta at the wheel of the Toyota TF104, the tester posting a quickest lap of 1:18.597.

Zonta's teammate Cristiano da Matta, meanwhile, debuted the revised chassis that will make its Grand Prix debut in Germany next week and with which the Japanese squad hope to move a step forward.

Da Matta completed a total of 46 laps with the car and posted the third fastest time of the day, over half a second behind Zonta. The Toyotas were split in the timesheets by Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who was the only Ferrari driver on track today at the wheel of the F2004.

The McLaren team had both test drivers working at Jerez today, with Pedro de la Rosa outpacing Alexander Wurz, the busiest man today. Both men drove the old MP4-19 car.

Williams, BAR, Renault and Jaguar are expected to join the test tomorrow.
