Jerez 1: Zonta on top

Toyota's Ricardo Zonta was the quickest man on track on the first day of testing at Jerez on Tuesday. The Brazilian, driving the team's original-spec car, just edged out Rubens Barrichello who drove the sole Ferrari on the Spanish track

Zonta completed 94 laps using the TF104 but tested software that will be used on the team's heavily-revised new car - the TF104B - which was driven today by team-mate Cristiano da Matta in preparation for its race debut at the German Grand Prix on July 25.

Da Matta was the third quickest driver on the track in the new car. There are still more aero parts to be fitted to the car which will make it 15kg lighter by time it gets to Hockenheim for round 12.

The McLaren duo of Pedro de la Rosa and Alexander Wurz brought up the rear of the pack in the MP4-19. The team's new car is at Silverstone where team drivers David Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen will test it this week.

Testing continues at Jerez on Wednesday with Williams, BAR, Jaguar and Renault set to join the action.
