Wurz quickest in practice 1 - Germany

Alex Wurz continued his strong 2006 form by topping the times in the opening free practice session for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim

The Williams test driver set the pace in 1:16.349 on the last of the 26 laps he completed.

Honda test driver Anthony Davidson was less than two tenths of a second slower in second, with BMW Sauber tester Robert Kubica in third.

Jenson Button was the best race driver in fourth for Honda, but he was over a second off the pace of Wurz.

Red Bull test driver Robert Doornbos was fifth, despite two spins, and Rubens Barrichello made it three Hondas in the top six.

Toro Rosso test driver Neel Jani blotted his copybook on his first flying lap as he spun at the tight hairpin at the back of the circuit before Doornbos repeated the offence.

Christijan Albers ground to a halt at the pit exit with an unusual Toyota engine failure in the back of his Midland in the dying minutes of the session.

Williams driver Nico Rosberg ended the session in the tyre barriers seconds later minus his rear wing at turn two. The incident went unnoticed by TV cameras but it is thought he spun after his tyres were covered in oil as a result of Albers' stoppage.

Defending world champion Fernando Alonso was only seventh for Renault, but his title rival Michael Schumacher did not take to the track in his Ferrari, disappointing his home crowd.
