Williams launch: BMW finds more power

BMW Motorsport has built a brand new engine, the P83, which is the lightest and powerful it has ever produced for the radical new Williams BMW FW25

"It's an all-new engine based on the previous engines," said BMW Motorsport director Dr Mario Theissen. "There's a bit less weight and a lower centre of gravity, but it produces more revs and more power."

When it re-entered Formula 1, BMW quickly established itself as top dog in terms of power and driveability, but last year it was suggested by some in the paddock that Ferrari had drawn level with the Munich firm. Theissen is keen to regain the advantage.

"Yet again we were the first to test our new engine on the track, and we were even earlier than last year," said Theissen. "The BMW P83, like its two predecessors, is designed to be the most powerful engine in Formula 1."

BMW's Gerhard Berger is also acutely aware of the need for BMW to make another step forward heading into its fourth season of competition with Williams. "We want to pick up from where we left off in terms of our qualifying performance of 2002," said Berger, "especially under the new regulations for a single timed lap.

"But for the 2003 season we have firmly resolved to claim more wins and podium places. We're focussed ahead while also keeping an eye on the rear-view mirror."
