Williams Backs 'Outstanding' Webber
Mark Webber has been given a public vote of confidence by his Williams team over his performances this year - despite a relative lack of results
The Australian had gone into the season full of confidence and with many predicting the chance of a maiden victory, but despite a podium finish in Monaco he has failed to live up to the high expectations.
And amid rumours that both Webber and the team were unhappy about how things had panned out, team boss Frank Williams made it clear on Saturday that the team were happy with their lead driver - especially given Webber's strong qualifying form.
"It is easy to say he has had a difficult season and I suppose some of his race results have been disappointing, but some of the incidents have been racing incidents," said Williams.
"His qualifying has been absolutely outstanding and he is clearly a very quick driver. I don't think there is a change to his attitude at all.
"He is very regarded within the team not just because he has a clear ability to go very quickly but if you take him to a sponsor day, unlike the prima donnas previously, there is no aggro.
"At the end of the day, if you don't please the sponsors you are out of business."
When asked whether he believed Webber was a winner of the future, Williams nodded and said: "He has just got to prove it."
