Williams admits it wants Webber

New BMW WilliamsF1 team technical director Sam Michael has admitted that Jaguar Racing driver Mark Webber is top of the team's potential driver list for next year. The Australian has been linked to the team for several months but this is the strongest indication yet that Webber will make the switch at the end of 2004

Speaking in Montreal, Michael said: "He has the right mentality, he has an aggressive attitude, he seems like a good team player, he's been fast and talented in any car he's ever driven from Formula Fords through sportscars to Formula 1. He's outperformed his team mates - except for today! - and so he looks like a positive step."

Michael added that it was too early to say whether an agreement with Webber will be reached and confirmed that the team had also had a meeting with Jacques Villeneuve.

"We had a meeting with Jacques to get his latest position on what he wanted out of Formula 1 and to see whether he could fit into our future plans. At the moment we are still reviewing our drivers for 2005 and there's nothing guaranteed, but we might consider a test later in the year. But it's still a bit premature to say he will test.

"He obviously wants to do the job and seemed like a committed guy. He wants to prove that he's not over the hill and has a good mentality. He's kept himself very fit, he's a very determined individual and they were positive meetings."
