When two Formula 1 drivers collide

Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa are not enjoying the best F1 season, and that reflected again in Singapore. Lee McKenzie offers her view on the weekend's events

For a Formula 1 fan, incidents in the race are one of the reasons why the sport is so compelling. This year we've even seen drivers coming together in qualifying. But drivers clashing in the interview area after the race are not something you expect to see.

The Lewis Hamilton vs Felipe Massa row started on Saturday when Massa told me that "Lewis didn't use his mind - again" after the two came close in Q3. Then on Sunday, the two, who seem magnetic, had another meeting. Hamilton lost his wing and got a drive-through for his efforts after Massa got a puncture.

So after the longest, toughest race of the year should we be surprised that emotions don't stop when the engine does? Also, both drivers are having a tough season and whilst they are watching their team-mates bag points and podiums, Hamilton and Massa are in an uncomfortable place right now - desperate to show they still have the old magic that created the title showdown just three years ago.

I do think that Massa's timing to approach Lewis was wrong. They could have spoken as they got weighed or when they got out of the car and not in front of 50 waiting cameras! But it makes good viewing so I am sure you're not complaining!

Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber are two drivers who have also recently been racing wheel-to-wheel plenty in the last few races. But whether it is Spa or Singapore, the moves work, respect is given and no one goes home upset.

After the race I had some Red Bull interviews to do, which meant I had a nice trip on the Singapore flyer with Sebastian Vettel, Webber, Christian Horner and Adrian Newey.

I have never seen such a relaxed group of people after such a frantic few hours - you would think they had been watching TV, not getting closer to the inevitable and almost securing the championships they have all worked so hard to win. The atmosphere was great and it was a lovely way to finish of the race weekend, although maybe Christian Horner didn't think so as he is scared of heights!

Even Sebastian was talking about the championship with a knowing smile, something that drivers are very reluctant to do. It was also nice to see Mark and Sebastian together away from all the media and cameras - they were laughing and joking together and whilst I am not saying they are best friends, it was obvious that any animosity widely reported last year, has cleared.

Adrian Newey was saying he's straight back into the office to work on next year's car, a phrase that will bring other teams out in a cold sweat. Mark is off to Australia and Seb is heading back to Europe.

Meanwhile, I am looking forward to some time back in the UK after 3 weeks away in Monza, Venezuela to film with Pastor Maldonado and then Singapore. We all need to save some energy, especially when you think we are only three quarters of the way through the season! The championships look decided but there is plenty more racing to come.
