What are F1's cockpit safety solutions?

Justin Wilson's fatal IndyCar accident has brought the topic of driver safety in single-seater racing back into focus. CRAIG SCARBOROUGH explains how closed cockpits and other options could work

World champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are among those in favour of them, Le Mans 24 Hours winner Nico Hulkenberg is against them - the divisive topic of closed cockpits in Formula 1 shows no sign of ending at the moment.

The spotlight on that particular debate has returned in the wake of Justin Wilson's fatal IndyCar accident, with the need to improve driver safety in single-seater racing clear to those on both sides of the argument.

CLOSED COCKPITS

While FIA technical director Charlie Whiting has declared protected cockpits will happen in Formula 1 at some point, it appears fighter-jet-style cockpits - the most controversial subject in this debate - are unlikely to grace F1.

Whiting has said the closed-cockpit's negatives "significantly outweighed" the positives, so perhaps the HALO concept stands a greater chance in the long term.

As Stuart Codling explains with Craig Scarborough's video, there are benefits to the closed-cockpit solution - but drawbacks as well.

MERCEDES' HALO

The championship-dominating Mercedes team has devised an alternative solution, which is a halo-like concept.

With a less obstructive view and enhanced safety, it is one of two ideas the FIA is continuing to test.

Should the FIA decide the two concepts it is currently evaluating are not appropriate or achievable, it appears that will not be the end of the debate.

Instead, it will go back to the drawing board and continue its attempt to minimise one of the greatest risks to a driver's safety.
