Webber backs Singapore's F1 bid

Australian driver Mark Webber says Formula One could have a "signature event" if the sport raced in Singapore

Webber took to the streets of Singapore over the weekend for a trial run of the proposed street circuit that would host a Formula One Grand Prix.

Singapore is in talks with Bernie Ecclestone over the possibility of hosting a race there.

The 4.8-kilometre route has been proposed by F1 track designer Herman Tilke.

"It's a very clean and beautiful city and I think it's a real signature event if you can have a Formula One Grand Prix here," Webber told local media.

"I can see the enthusiasm and the excitement to have an international sporting event such as the world Formula One championships here and it's something which looks exciting, no questions about it," the Red Bull driver added.

The Singapore event has been tipped as one of the races likely to be held at night, an idea Ecclestone has been backing in order to improve television audiences in Europe.

Webber reckons there needs to be more research in order to learn about the viability of night races.

"They are talking about the night concept which again is very, very new and pioneering and something which has not been done before in Formula One," said Webber.  "The question of whether it rains has been mentioned.

"It requires a lot of research and development into actually understanding how that could take place in terms of the amount of lighting required to make the event safe for the drivers, for marshals and (other) people taking part.

"There's a few unanswered questions which need a bit more research, but that happens when you have something very exciting and something very new which is what we have here."
