Walkinshaw Q&A

Arrows has had a difficult start to the 2002 season, but there have been signs that the Cosworth-powered machine has some potential. In the first two grands prix the car out-qualified the Jaguar R3s, losing out in Brazil where Michelin had an advantage and Jaguar began to get its act together. The actual races have been disappointing, with the grid disaster and subsequent black flags in Australia being followed by matching suspension failures at Interlagos. It's no secret that the team is under financial pressure, and Tom Walkinshaw had the additional distraction of trying to build a new team from the ashes of Prost. Adam Cooper caught up with the Scot

"Up until Brazil I was quite happy. I think the car is good, but we need more testing in terms of trying to get the most out of it. But when you get it hooked up it's quick."

"It's good and strong, and the drivers are happy with it, which is the main thing."

"Yes, it's good to be able to bench mark yourself off the Jaguar and vice versa. It's going back and forward depending on which circuit is more suited to the tyres we're on. I think it's good for both of us, and it gives you a lot of incentive."

"Quite difficult. I think the pendulum will swing quite dramatically one way or the other."

"Yes, he'd had a big, big impact on the team. He's starting to get everybody really focussed and he's bringing on Bernoldi as well."

"Yes, because people listen to them. If they've never really made it then after a couple of races the engineers get sceptical and so forth. But if you've got someone who knows what he's talking about and has done it then they're forced to pay attention and dig down and find the performance, and that's exactly what's happening."

"I think the incentive to try and contain the costs is a good one. I don't think we're isolated from the world economy, and we have to be seen to be doing it. So yes I support it. I think there will be other things coming through in the next few months."

"I think if you curtailed testing, and maybe had two or three three-day tests in the course of the season, and maybe a little bit more running on the Friday to enable one to do the rest of the work, then I think that's all that is necessary."

"I don't know, that's up to them. I've been busy with my own team. I'm sure when they sort things out wih the FIA we'll see them."
