Valtteri Bottas says Canadian Grand Prix slump was inevitable

The Williams rookie had been the star of wet qualifying as he put his car - which had not previously managed to get in the top 10 all season - third on the grid.

He tumbled to 14th in the race, and said afterwards that due to the nature of the track Williams was never going to be quick enough to score points in the dry.

"I really gave everything today and so did the team," said Bottas. "No matter what we would've done differently with strategy or whatever, it would've been the same position.

"The car pace was just not there.

"I was hoping to get my first points here and the team was also really pumped up for the race here after qualifying.

"But I think at a track like this when the weather turns out to be dry, with two DRS zones and long straights, overtaking is easier than some other tracks.

"Everyone settles to the place where the car pace is, no matter where you start."

Bottas had joked on Saturday that if he scored a good result he would celebrate by jumping in the St Lawrence river that surrounds the circuit.

He said his relief at avoiding having to fulfil that pledge was only slight.

"I think that's the other positive," he said. "Finishing the race is always good. That and [not going in] the lake.

"But I would have much rather been in the points and jumping in the lake."
