Valencia day 3: New Arrows runs

The new Arrows A23 had its maiden run on a proper race circuit today on the third day of Valencia Formula 1 testing

Enrique Bernoldi managed 16 laps in the Cosworth-powered car. With the second Arrows driver yet to be announced, the Brazilian was the lone representative from the team. The Dutch press has reported today that Heinz-Harald Frentzen is to be named as the outfit's other driver tomorrow (Thursday), but a team spokeswoman denied all knowledge of any planned announcement.

Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella topped the times in last year's car, ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya in the new Williams FW24. The Colombian's form will be a welcome fillip for the team following criticism of the car's speed from BMW motorsport boss Gerhard Berger.

Nick Heidfeld continued his impressive form by setting the third best time for Sauber. The German had been quickest the day before. His new team mate Felipe Massa was fifth, behind the other Williams of Ralf Schumacher.

British American Racing were expecting to run a new aero package and a new Honda engine, but neither was used today. Olivier Panis and Jacques Villeneuve were eighth and 11th respectively.

While Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were tied up at the Ferrari F2002 launch in Maranello, test drivers Luciano Burti and Luca Badoer continued testing last year's F2001 at Mugello. Electronics work and tyre testing were on the agenda, with Badoer managing a best time of 1m33.198s over 56 laps, and Burti setting a 1m33.378s over 34 laps. Schumacher and Barrichello will take over tomorrow (Thursday).
