Valencia, day 3: Button pushes

BAR's Jenson Button outpaced team-mate Jacques Villeneuve once again in Valencia today, but only just kept ahead of Nick Heidfeld's Sauber on the timesheets. The gap to Heidfeld was a mere 0.1s as the two teams amassed the data that will help them around Monaco and then Montreal

"Today we have done tyre work and downforce configuration for Monaco as well as for Montreal," said Sauber's Remi Decorzent. "We have learnt quite some things from our work today and tested new parts which will be on the race cars for the forthcoming events."

The session was mostly trouble-free until Button brought out the red flags after a mechanical problem stopped him out on track.

The water truck is due to make an appearance tomorrow, for a wet weather simulation test. Heinz-Harald Frentzen replaces Heidfeld for the day, while BAR continues with the same arrangement.

Michael Schumacher continued Ferrari's test programme with its F2003-GA machine, logging 142 laps of the Fiorano test track with a best time of 56.591s. Felipe Massa will join him tomorrow (Friday).
