Valencia 1: Wurz on top

Alex Wurz set the fastest time for McLaren on the first day of a crucial three-day test at Valencia in Spain on Tuesday. The Austrian, driving a modified version of last year's McLaren-Mercedes MP4-19B, set a lap time of 1m09.386s, which was more than a second quicker than anyone else managed all day

McLaren, Williams and Toyota, were all in attendance at Valencia, and all of them brought along their new 2005 challengers. But the test will grow in significance on Wednesday when BAR, Renault and Ferrari all join in with 2005 machinery, giving F1 its first form marker of the season.

Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld were second and third fastest as the two got down to business in the new Williams BMW FW27s. The drivers are reported to have been happy with the improvements made as they went through standard systems check programmes.

The two new team-mates completed 173 laps between them and ended the day as the fastest two drivers in 2005 cars.

Ralf Schumacher was fourth quickest in the Toyota TF105 ahead of the team's test driver Olivier Panis. McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa brought up the rear in the new MP4-20. The Spaniard only completed 21 laps and was twice forced to stop out on circuit.

Alex Wurz (McLaren), 1m09.386s 90
Mark Webber (Williams), 1m10.538s 83*
Nick Heidfeld (Williams), 1m10.903s 90*
