Toyota Set Modest Goal for the Race

Toyota's technical director Mike Gascoyne says he expected the Japanese squad to struggle at the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend and admitted their goal for tomorrow is just to finish the race.

Toyota's technical director Mike Gascoyne says he expected the Japanese squad to struggle at the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend and admitted their goal for tomorrow is just to finish the race.

"Coming here, we knew that we would struggle for pace in qualifying, so we have aimed for a more conservative race strategy," said Gascoyne after qualifying.

"With the way the tyres are behaving, I am sure that this is the right decision. The team did a reasonable job today and the cars are quite well balanced, just lacking in grip, as we knew they would be.

"Now we have to see how the race pans out tomorrow and ensure that we get both cars to the finish."

Frenchman Olivier Panis was the quickest of the Toyota duo, posting the 13th quickest time of the day, 1.8 seconds off pole position. His Brazilian teammate Cristiano da Matta was 15th fastest in his second visit to the Monte Carlo circuit.

Toyota are yet to score a point this season.
