Toyota score a point with Salo

Toyota got off to a dream start in Formula 1, with Mika Salo surviving the carnage in the Australian Grand Prix to score an historic point with sixth place

The Finn admitted that the result was arguably the most significant of his career, although he could have taken fifth from Minardi's Mark Webber had he not spun while chasing the Aussie in the closing stages.

"We had a great race today," Salo said. "I was hit on the first lap and we had to change the track rod at the rear, but the car felt quick and reliable after that. I am very happy for the team, they have worked really well this weekend. I have had championship points before, but this point is probably the most important."

Toyota team manager Ange Pasquale was struggling to contain his delight.

"It was just unbelievable!" he beamed. "We had just about everything happen this weekend. When the race started with a shambles I must admit I was scared seeing the accident and knowing that Allan was midfield. But straight away he got on the radio and we knew he was okay.

"We called Mika in to check out the rear suspension because we knew there had been contact but there was no panic. We put safety first because we knew it was a long race and the field was depleted. First and foremost we wanted to gain experience and finish the race.

Salo's 11th hour spin caused consternation. "I nearly fell off my chair on the pit wall!" Pasquale admitted. "I grabbed Ove Andersson's arm and just shouted: this can't be! There was nothing on the radio and nobody spoke for about 15 seconds."
