Historic Day for New Boys Toyota

Formula One new boys Toyota made an historic Grand Prix debut on Sunday by claiming sixth place in their first ever race in the category.

Not since the Sauber team made their debut in the 1993 season, a Formula One team had scored points at their debut Grand Prix. Back then, Finn JJ Lehto finished in fifth place at the South African Grand Prix at the Kyalami circuit, giving the Swiss squad their first points.

After a promising start to their first Grand Prix, qualifying in 14th and 16th places, Toyota made an impressive entry with Mika Salo's sixth place in today's race. The Finn, who was forced to come into the pits after being hit at the start of the race, spun in the penultimate lap of the race when trying to overtake Minardi's Mark Webber for fifth place. Fortunately for Salo, he could continue and give Toyota their first Championship point.

"We had a great race today," said Salo. "I was hit on the first lap and we had to change the track rod at the rear, but the car felt quick and reliable after that. I am very happy for the team, they have worked really well this weekend. I have had Championship points before but this point is probably the most important."

Teammate Allan McNish, who was making his Grand Prix debut in Australia, suffered an early heartache when he was forced to retire at the first corner following the start mayhem. The Scot, however, was delighted for the Japanese team.

"It was quite disappointing not getting past the opening lap of our first Grand Prix," he said. "Even though I could not finish the race I gained a lot more experience during the weekend. I am thrilled for Mika scoring a point. The team have been superb."
