Toyota launch: Threat concerns rivals
The first Formula 1 launch ahead of 2002 happens today (Monday) as Toyota reveals its nascent challenge in Cologne, Germany - and rivals are already talking up the Japanese car giant's potential due to the massive budget available
F1 debutant Allan McNish and the returning Mika Salo will head Toyota's challenge as it follows Ferrari's lead by building its own chassis and engine - the first new entrant to do so in over 20 years.
Jaguar Racing team principal Niki Lauda says the money being spent by the Japanese marque far outweighs any other team in Formula 1. Its budget is believed to be in the region of 100 to 150 million pounds.
"Toyota could buy Ferrari from its petty cash," said Lauda.
Mercedes-Benz motorsport chief Norbert Haug has also underlined Toyota's threat, saying the Ove Andersson-led team could shock on its maiden season.
"From my point of view Toyota will surprise," said Haug. "The financial means at their disposal are like no other team."
