Toyota Hoping to Benefit from Latest Spec Engine

Toyota are hoping the latest spec of their engine will help them score some points after a strong showing in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.

Toyota are hoping the latest spec of their engine will help them score some points after a strong showing in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix.

Finn Mika Salo and Scot Allan McNish posted the 10th and 12th quickest times of the session and the Cologne-based outfit will use their new spec engine for the first time in tomorrow's race, hoping the revised unit will boost their chances of a top six finish.

"We have not yet found the perfect set-up on the TF102s, but both drivers performed very well in qualifying," said technical co-ordinator Keizo Takahashi. "Tomorrow, for the first time, we will use our new spec engine in the race and hope to use the high power and reliability to good effect.

"Clearly our aim is to finish the race, but also to make up places when and where we can."

Salo, who have scored Toyota's two points this season, admitted he was disappointed to finish in 10th place but said he was confident of a strong race.

"I was expecting a bit of a higher qualifying position," said Salo. "With a full tank of fuel the car has been really quick and consistent all weekend and it seems that when we drop the fuel level, it is not as good.

"I am a little disappointed but at the end of the day 10th at Monza is a very good place to start. I am confident for the race tomorrow. We should have a good race car."
