Toyota confirms McNish's race seat

Toyota has confirmed at a press conference at Suzuka in Japan that Allan McNish will drive alongside Mika Salo in its new Formula 1 team next year

McNish, 31, has always been in the frame for the drive, but had to prove his pace compared to Salo in this year's testing programme. Toyota's team boss Ove Andersson stated at the launch of the car in March that McNish would get the drive if things went according to plan.

"Everything went well so there was no reason to change my mind," said Andersson.

McNish said: "My ability as an F1 driver was recognised [in the tests] and I am very happy to have been officially chosen as a driver for the coming season. This fills me with confidence that I can accomplish the difficult tasks ahead.

"There is a mountain of things we must do before our first race next year, and I intend to fully devote myself to bringing out my very best."

Toyota began a three-day test session on Monday at Suzuka, as it continues to gain mileage at Grand Prix venues. The Japanese marque is exempt from the F1 test ban until it lodges its entry with the FIA later next month.
