Todt rubbishes bad relations talk

Ferrari boss Jean Todt has denied that Eddie Irvine's relationship with Michael Schumacher is deteriorating as the team aims for a 'dream' repeat of last year's 1-2 finish at Magny Cours

Italian newspapers report the Irishman is proving increasingly popular in the country and team-mate Michael Schumacher is increasingly unpopular for his remote attitude.

Speculation has increased that the Irishman could be on his way out of the team because his improving form and outspoken manner since his debut victory at the opening race of the season in Melbourne is making him unpopular with Schumacher.

'I would not say that the relationship been our two drivers has changed,' said Todt, Ferrari's sporting director.

'It has been good for four seasons now, and it is still excellent. We can only be happy about that, and of course Michael is pleased to see Eddie being competitive, because it means their teamwork is good.

'Eddie's job is the same as it always was. He is given the same car as Michael and he must try to get the best out of it.

'This year's car is an improvement. It is easier to drive and easier for Eddie to manage. So far, the results aren't bad. Maybe we are now quite competitive enough, but still...'

Irvine has been linked to the vacant seat at Jordan when Damon Hill quits the team at the end of the season but Todt is a key figure in deciding the team's driver line-up.

Magny Cours marks the sixth anniversary of Todt's arrival at Ferrari.

Since then Ferrari has won the race twice: in 1997 and 1998 and scored a 1-2 last season.

'Our dream result would be to do the same again this year. At this point in the season, every race is a real battle to defend our chances in both championships.

'Testing has gone well but, of course, Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race are what counts.'
